Re-colouring grout on DIY tiling/grouting job Advice and information on tiling and fixing tiles to a variety of surfaces

My husband and I tiled and grouted our kitchen floor a couple of years ago. But I chose the wrong colour grout (sandstone colour to match sandstone colour tiles) as the grout now looks dingy and is very hard to clean. We have used a sealant on the grout to protect it but it still looks awful! We're now thinking about recolouring the grout with a brown grout, but worry that our the lines of intial DIY grouting may not be 'clean' enough and that once painted brown the whole thing might look even worse. Any advice would be greatly appreaciated. TIA JOH

Hi Jon,
You will do best to rake out the existing grout to around 4mm, then re grout with new grouting of your chosen colour - do dampen the remains grout before you apply the new.
It’s a horrible job but you should be able to find a tungsten carbide tool to make scraping out easier.
