Book shelves in a corner

I want to build some book shelves around a corner of my sitting room. Both sides of the corner will be around 90cm and both walls are masonary walls. The height of the unit will be about 2.5m I'm just wondering how best to consruct and support the shelves, should they be all one piece of timber goin...

Floor structure

I'm converting my existing basement into additional living space and wondered if anyone can advise on the floor structure. The existing floor is concrete, level and in good condition. I've got no issue with the ceiling height so can I just have a damp proof membrane, insulation and floating floor? A...

Which plasterboard

Can anyone recommend an insulated taper edge plasterboard for use in a basement conversion? Also would it be necessary to use any additional insulation besides the board?

Cheers

Basement Conversion

I have an existing basement that I am converting into additional living space. At present the basement has virtually no damp so I'm debating exactly what to do to treat it as the Rolls Royce job of full membrane and sump/pump is a bit of an overkill but not sure whether I can risk just standard dry ...

Bathroom light switch

The light and switch in my bathroom does not conform to regulations being a standard switch and pendant light. I am replacing the light with a sealed unit and intended to replace the light switch with a pull cord or switch other side of the wall however a friend has just advised me that there are no...

Filling prior to plastering

I have just removed the tiles around my bath (a single layer) and in a couple of places chunks have come out of the plasterboard and the skimming has also come off. The whole wall is due to be tiled and I'm wondering what I should do to prepare it in the areas where it is not level. should I use fil...

Basement Floor Construction

I'm about to convert my existing basement into living area and want some advice on what flooring construction to use. The existing floor is a decent concrete slab onto which I will be putting a membrane. I've been told I can either put my insulation straight on top of this followed by a timber float...

Bar Mixer Showers/Combi Boiler

I'm putting a shower into my house and wondered if someone could help me. I want to put a mixer shower in and I have a combi boiler heating system. I was all set on putting a bar valve type mixer in but have been advised by my trade supplier that there is a possibility it won't work properly with a ...

I thought this might be the case, so I will need a fire door at the top of the stairs from the kitchen protecting the route to the basement window.

You mention ventilation, does this need to be thought of differently to ventilation I will be using from a damp perspective?

Thanks for that, very useful.

For the plastic membrane do you use the same stuff as on the floor? And how do you fix it to the wall?

When you say filled out, what do you mean exactly?

Which plasterboard/insulation

I'm currently planning the conversion of my existing basement into living space. As there is minimal damp at the moment and what little there is is probably due to the window being poorly boarded up I don't intend to tank the walls, just dry line and fit a sump/pump as an emergency measure. Could an...

Bedroom with no window - fire regulations

I'm drawing up plans to convert my basement into living accomodation. As part of those plans there will be one small room which does not have an external window that will be used as a snug room/3rd bedroom. I'm told that my design will have to take into account fire regulations for means of escape a...

Dry Line or Tank a basement

I'm planning to convert the basement in my house into a couple of bedrooms and was all lined up to have it tanked out with a waterproof cavity lining and sump/pump system but have just had it pointed out to me that it isn't actually particularly damp in the basement so dry lining and additional vent...
