Can I TIG weld aluminum with DC using Helium as a gas?

I know that aluminum is only welded in AC mode because of the unique metal properties that require cleaning and penetration to be both performed simultaneously and the alternating current can do that but I do not have an AC TIG machine available at the moment.. I remember back in the day when an old...

Re: Old Pipe but is it safe to remove?

If that is an open pipe (from what I can tell in the photo) then there is no risk of removing it. It doesn't have water and it is not under pressure. However from what I can tell that pipe goes through the wall and on the other side and there it has an arc fitting of 90 degrees. Removing it without ...

Re: Brickwork around garage door and load bearing lintel

I would like just to weight in on this: "The horizontal beam is pretty big, and sits across the top of the vertical beams - this makes me think it is supposed to be supportive?" What do you mean by vertical columns? Do you mean the pillars? If you have two columns and the horizontal beam s...

Re: Concealed cistern straight swap with plastic one?

Hi Darran, Which brand is the manufacturer? Grohe? Geberit? Althou most brands work with similar systems.. If you wish to replace the concealed system then you will need to uncover it which means breaking the tiles and the drywall construction in most cases. Unless you have some other way of accessi...

Re: How to detach Bosch heating element from oven - there are no screws

Are those perhaps some type of a covering over the screws? Do they appear to be glued or to go through the element surface?

Re: Loft Conversion and Structural Help Needed

Hi there, I can not really make out the type of construction of your roof from your photos. There are various types of roof constructions that use very similarly looking "beam" placements. Those are not really beams as in they do not have a function of a beam :) Anyway, those central horiz...

Re: Garage conversion and insulating metal roof for sound and heat

If that is to be a home office than you will need proper insulation. Summer heat and metal roofs really dont do well together and if we assume that you will be using some sort of a HVAC system then you will want a properly insulated roof in order to waste less electricity and lower bills. Considerin...

Re: Stud wall in flat

I second not fixing the wall to the floor unless you are certain that there are no elcetrical or other type of instalations beneath the concrete surface. If you need to fix it to the floor then perhaps you could use some glue? I am sure that there are industrial solutions for wood to concrete adhesi...
