Upon looking again one looks like old lead piping. Can you access where they lead to? Via a crawl space or something? I had the same thing when I opened up my fireplace recently but mine was electrical. Luckily only plug sockets, I had to reroute them and fill in the holes with fire cement. They look like old gas pipes to me but I wouldn’t mess around with anything like that, I’d personally get someone to come and ...

Help nice people of the internet. I’m shortly Going to be boarding my loft, I want to strengthen the joists by securing cross timbers on top of the existing joists. Hi that’s what I ended up doing in the end, modifying the surround, just added two strips of pine on the legs at the back and you won’t be able to tell once it’s been painted. Thanks for the reply
