hi armytouch,
are the blemishes like patches with small dimples like the surface of a golfball? if so it could be because you arent applying enough pressure.
do you have ample lighting when you are skimming if not this could be the reason you arent seeing them earlier.

hi chris, the way i would do it would be to just nail the beads on with plenty of nails, if they are knocking of the old corner try angling the nails away from the corner, which should work. If the corner is really baddly battered you could use bonding compound to form the corner then let it dry and...

just too add maybe if you could buy thin board that will slid above the cornice as chris said. another way around it would be to do as you said originally and it will probably leave a gap around the edge between the cornice and the board what you would do then is crap old newspaper or any old paper ...

The edges of the boards should go tapered edge to tapered edge, unless unavoidable, if not it isn't a big problem really. As for the joint tapeing you should tape all joints between boards. Also the edges that arent tapered you should try and get an edge that you haven't cut (the edge that is there ...
