Thanks, I appreciate your input. All makes perfect sense.

I think the JB is in the diagram just to make the wiring simple, it was mentioned in the article that you could go direct from the Isolator switch.

Yes, I appreciate that, but I'm running a fan from a spur off a ring main, which is why this diagram is just about right for me. As I understand it, the 3-pole isolator is there to enable you to work on the fan safely. I would like to install the isolator near the fan (seems to be the most practical...

The diagram for wiring a Timed Fan unit on this site (at m) shows the 3-pole isolation switch fitted BEFORE the Junction Box and Switch but it seems to me that it would be better BETWEEN the Junction Box and the Fan.
