Re: Pergola Structural Strength

Hi craigfarrall, Your structure looks fine as it is but I suspect the flexibility is in the joint hangers. Try driving 120mm part thread screws through the outside framing timber and into the end grain of the rafters. This will pull the structure square and stop flexing. You will need an impact dri...

Paint for garden decking & pergola

I have recently built a pergola and decking area in my garden using timber. I am now wanting to paint everything grey, to match the fence panels and general style of everything else in my garden. Whenever I go to look at what paint is available online and read reviews, they generally keep saying the...

Pergola Structural Strength

I have recently built out a decking and pergola area in my garden. I must caveat this by saying I am a complete novice DIY'er, but like to get involved. I have attached a few photos of how this looks currently - but I have concerns about the top bit with the rafters from a structural perspective. As...

Pergola Posts Equal Heights for Full Width Pergola

I am installing a large pergola towards the back of my garden, that goes the full width of the garden (roughly around 1065cm in width total). I am looking at installing a post in each of the four corners firstly and then add in further posts at varying intervals to perform the structure. My issue I ...

Advice on maximum height of pergola

I am looking at building a pergola and I am unsure what the maximum height should be. I've read online that this should be 2.5m, maximum if away from the perimeter of the house, so that you don't have to get planning permission. My question is, I am not sure at what point that 2.5m should start? Whe...

Advice for building large pergola in garden

Hi All, I am looking for some advice for a novice DIY'er looking at adding a large pergola into my garden. To give everyone a bit of context, I have a garden width of 1100cm and I am wanting to build a basic, modern pergola the full width of the garden, with as little posts in the middle as possible...
