What Type of Workshop Insulation to use in new Timber Workshop

Hi. I've recently disposed of my old asbestos garage (legally), and replaced it with a 2o'x8' timber workshop. Could anyone advise me on what type of insulation to use on the walls and ceiling, to stop my equipment getting damp, and to keep it reasonably warm to work in. I was thinking of using supe...

Mains Water Pipe and Leak Under Kitchen Floor

I live in an old cottage, and have developed a leak in my kitchen floor. To get to the pipe means digging up my kitchen and bathroom floor, an easier way would be to re-route the incoming mains from the stop tap at the back of my downstairs bathroom, along the outside of the B/room wall, and in to t...

Render repairs

My cottage has a Tyrolean finish over render. Over the last few years, some cracks have appeared and I am repairing them by cutting out the cracks and filling with sand/cement render. To finish the job, I need to apply a tyrolean coating, but I have been told that I can use a mix of sand/cement in t...

To dryline or not to dryline ?

The back bedroom in my 1840 cottage, only has a single brick construction ( 5ins ) on the two outside walls. The condensation on these walls, due to it's coldness, is very bad. I've been told that drylining these two walls is a good idea. Taking off the old plaster, placing a membrane on the brickwo...

Rendering a chimney

Hi all, I have recently had to repair my chimney, by slabbing the top and replacing the pot, due to a change in our heating. I now need to repair the rendering around the chimney. Do I need to apply a scratch coat, or could I get away with just one thick coat of render ? Also, what mix should I use,...

Hi Kbrownie, you have answered all my questions at one go ! I will do as you suggested and place polythene lining on walls before studding them, then put insulation between timbers under foil backed board. Just a couple of questions, what sort of insulation would you recommend, and what would you do...

Hi KBrownie, I think I have solved damp problem, there were 3 ridge tiles which weren't secure, and rainwater was running down the loft wall and making the top of the interior bedroom wall damp. But the wall was an exterior wall and only single brick, so was very cold. My father had a massive radiat...

Many thanks for the help on my single brick walls. Should I also use the foil backed plasterboard on the walls, screwed to 2x2 batons with insulated foam boards between the batons ? I think this site is brill for us amateurs, and I will still need a professional plasterer to skim over, so we won't b...

Dry lining single brick exterior wall

Hi all, my back bedroom has a very high ceiling, and only single brick construction on 2 exterior walls. The room has damp patches on the 2 exterior walls. I want to put in a lower ceiling, using new joists and plasterboard, and I want to 'dry line' the 2 exterior walls as this room is very cold. Co...
