Thanks Fanann I was becoming resigned to many hours of scraping but found by trial and error that painting the tiles with nail varnish remover (don't tell the wife) and leaving them for a few minutes the vinyl softens and is much easier to remove. However I am sure there are Health and Safety aspect...
