Patching render on painted exterior wall

Hi - I have moved into a place that is partially rendered on the outside front wall. It looks like once upon a time some of the render came loose in a few patches of varying sizes (from about a 50p size to a few inches across). The previous owners repainted the render without filling the missing pat...

Changed fuse but some lights still won't work

My friend has phoned me with a problem that has me stumped (but then I don't know much about electrics). She lives in an older Victorian house that still has a fuse box with the ceramic cartridges that use fuse wire. All of her downstairs lights and sockets are apparently on one circuit. In the past...

Next dumb question - changing ballcock in loft tank

Hi, You guys have helped me a couple of times now so that I have been able to do simple plumbing jobs myself, and I'm hoping you can do it again. The ballcock in my loft cold water tank needs changing - when filling the tank the old one sometimes makes a terrible vibration noise that echoes through ...

Thanks htg. It is perfect, but for some reason Screwfix require a minimum £100 order for products in that range, and I don't need any other bathroom stuff. D'oh! I suppose I can contact Screwfix and see what they say, as they have been very accommodating in the past. Cheers - you guys at DIY Doctor...

Buying new toilet cistern

Hi My downstairs loo has an older style toilet where the cistern is mounted on the wall and connected to the pan via a curved pipe. Unfortunately the existing cistern is an ugly plastic slimline model and I would very much like to replace it with a simple ceramic one instead (I know I could replace ...

What type of valve?

Hi Last year I purchased a bath mixer from Screwfix: m and now the cold tap will not turn. I understand that the valve will need to be replaced but I don't know what size/type I am looking for. I realise that I could remove the old valve and take it to a plumbing supply shop for a match, but it woul...

Flow restrictor for toilet filling valve

Hi I am replacing my faulty toilet filler valve with a new Torbeck one. It's a very easy job, except I have one query - the instructions say the correct water pressure must be maintained using a restrictor if necessary. It then says if the pressure is below 1 bar there should be no restrictor, but I...

Thanks everyone. I think I have ruled out most simple causes like a kinked hose or service valves not fully on. The hoses supplied with my monobloc tap are very small bore and I was concerned when installing, but my wife just likes that damn sprayer so much!! In any event I guess I will go ahead and...

I have just the same problem and was going to start a new thread - glad I read down the list first! My kitchen tap is a monobloc type with an integral sprayer (the spray unit pulls out on a hose from the main spout) purchased from Argos so I assumed it was OK for UK plumbing. Hot water pressure (gra...
