Hi, I happen to be a gardener who specialises in victorian restoration work so possibly my advice will be a bit perfectionist but I'll give it anyway. Thanks for your reply, I probably will fit a fire back but at the mo I'm just repointing etc. Do you mean the same vermiculite that I would use in the greenhouse for sewing fine seeds. Small flakes?

The right mix?

Hi, can anyone tell me what additive I need to add to my mortar mix for cementing around a coal fire? I've been told to add vermiculite but this doesn't seem right.
