The cooker manufacturer's engineer arrived today and fitted the new jets. They made no difference; the whistle is still there and just as piercing. After he then discussed the problem with head office technical dept, they have decided to replace the cooker, but it can't be done for a fortnight. Oh w...

kbrownie, Many thanks for your kind reply. The transformer manufacturer's instructions are all in the German, so I will ask a friend, fluent in that language, to translate for me. (Once again, I have to thank this forum and its experts for providing such valuable help. Our local kitchen installer to...

Another question about cable length calculations.

I want to fit 4 low voltage lights under my kitchen wall cabinets. Each lamp is 12v 10W. Each will be wired to a mains transformer having individual connections for the 4 pairs. The cable run to the lamp furthest from the transformer is 6m (20 feet). Two questions please: 1. What size cables shall I...

Multistrand versus single conductor cables

I ask this question purely out of curiosity. My house is 40 years old and the 13amp ring circuits are wired with multistrand cables. Are today's new houses still wired with multistrand? Or is single conductor cable used these days? When comparing single and multistrand cables of the same size, is on...

Hi kbrownie, Thank you for explaining that the large sealed fuse on the incoming live belongs to the electricity company and can only be removed by their engineers. Now, is it correct to say that a consumer unit cannot be replaced safely unless that fuse is removed? And if so, does that mean that on...

I am ignorant when it comes to things electrical (indeed both kbrownie and sparx have given me valuable advice on a couple of matters in the past) but this question about replacing a consumer unit has got me wondering. So, purely for my information can you tell me: 1. In order to work safely, one mu...

The cooker maker's engineer came today and did all sorts of tests and checks. He eventually had to scratch his head and say that the whistle noise had him baffled. So he phoned his technical manager who said it sounded as if the jets may have been made incorrectly. The engineer will return in a few ...

RGI came back and checked pressures at cooker. With no cooker burners ignited, pressure was 20.4 millibars. With two hotplate burners full on, pressure was 19.9 millibars. Those two whistling hotplates continue to sing regardless of whether no other burners are on, or if all are on including the ove...

Thank you sparx for your clear explanation - in fact, thank you to all who gave replies. I can now proceed in the knowledge that provided all RCDs are in good working order, the required protection will be met. Many thanks again.

Hi Steve, thanks for that. I phoned the Corgi engineer who said there was not much point checking the pressure with the cooker on because we also have gas central heating and a separate gas fire. He said that he would expect the pressure to vary depending on which of our gas users were on at any par...

High pitch whistle from gas hotplate

Just taken delivery of a new free standing double oven gas cooker. The two most powerful burners on the hotplate emit a piercing whistle when turned at their lowest flame setting. The Corgi engineer said that this is sometimes due to incorrect gas pressure but this new cooker is not fitted with a ga...

Thank you for explaining that kbrownie. You asked what my problem is. Well, it's the fact that in my ignorance about all things electrical I thought that if the RCD not protecting the washing machine was the one to trip first, the second RCD might not then trip thus leaving the machine connected and...

Hi stoneyboy, thank you for your kind reply. Now that I've read my original question again, I'm not sure I've explained it properly. So let me try again. All the socket outlets on the ground floor of my house are wired on the same ring circuit. In the kitchen, one of the 2 gang sockets has an in-bui...

Three RCD's in one ring main.

The instructions that came with these RCD's state that when an earth leakage is detected there is no way of telling which of the three RCD's installed in the same ring main will trip first. I suppose this means that if, say, my washing machine were to develop a fault, it's RCD would not necessarily ...
