Hi, sounds like a very strange number of wires there, unless some of them are as you say the switch cables unmarked. You need to buy a cheap multimeter and with the circuit dead identify your switch cables and then the rest of them should be feeds.

Your post worries me, what do you mean when yopu say you have found the REAL mains feed???? IF it was wired from a dimmer circuit in the adjacent bedroom fine, If you had overloaded the circuit it would have made all lights dim not just some, how have you wired it (connections) as it sounds like you...

Read the reply again Merl, you need to connect it to the earth terminal not just tape the end up. It ius a SAFETY EARTH CONNECTION and MUST be connected to earth. Get a bigger bit of connector block just for the earths if thats the problem.

You are not allowed to touch your electric meter as it is the property of the electricity supplier , also the board its mounted on is their property. By attempting to move the meter yourself you are not only breaking the law by tampering with their equipment , but you could potentially kill yourself...

Please read topsparks post again ericmark as it says page 149 in the guidance notes relating to selection and erection of equipment NOT the regs book directly. I stand by my advice and i think you will find the OP said 40A connection. Well in my experience the normal DIYER will go to B+Q look for a ...

Be careful my friend you may fall foul of the council by re using the old notches. If you do use them you will have to provide adequate mechanical protection by putting some nail plates over the cable notches. You can get them from most good electrical wholesalers/builders merchants they are called ...

Ignore ladaman he is not thinking straight, no using 40A connectors on any of my jobs. The only conceivable way you could do it is to use the feed to the existing shower to feed a small consumer unit and then fuse down from that to feed your socketsv etc and the shower also. Just make sure the fuse ...

Hi if your thinking of running that much equipment in one room i suggest you will need a dedicated circuit from the fuse board to supply that . Unless everything is very low wattage then you will be ok using the existing ring main (providing you have a ring main )

As advised by opthers check with your DNO as they are the ones who make the rules up, they may make you pay to have the cables moved, and then again they might not, it depends how they feel at the time, but running through your loft void i would have thought is going to be a No No as if overloaded i...

It sounds like a loose connection in the lampholder to me , as soon as any current passes through the cable it loses its continuity and goes off. Try checking all connections to and from the switch to the light and then also look at the lampholder in the fitting you may find it is not making a good ...
