They are inside, they are for the stairs. Made of pine (I believe) in what's referred to as 'Colonial' style. The plan is just to paint the walls in a good hard-wearing paint. We did see a coloured varnish but also a Danish oil - wondered if that was applied with a cloth whether it would prove easie...
