Thanks for your replies. I have already just started trying the old screw fix in my bedroom, so fingers crossed. The thing about the house is that the rest of the workmanship is to a good standard i.e. properly carpented wooden architraves and skirtings etc, not horrible MDF. I suspect you're right ...
