victorian lintel

Hi, I would like to paint a victorian lintel. Currently, the surface is uneven and the paint is flaking. Firstly, how do I remove the old paint, it could be lead based. Scraping it off does not seem to work, will a hot air gun work on masonry? Secondly, how do I prepare the surface for the new paint...

Sash Windows - gaps between external brickwork

Hi, I am currrently refurbishing some large sash windows. The windows are out of the box. Externally, there is a gap of 4mm from the box frame and the brickwork. There is also a thin line of render which sits along the edge of the brickwork, but seems to have come away from the wooden frame. Is this...

Hi, I had the same problem a couple of years ago, we actually had the complete sills replaced on two windows. It was simply one block of new wood on each window, with some some kind of damp proofing course treatment under it. It took two hours and cost me £100 pounds. I then filled any fine gaps wit...

Hi Stoneyboy, I've discovered that masking tape is graded in hours (12 hour, 24 hour, 14 day etc) and that it gets more tackier the longer the hours. The economy masking tape I bought from B&Q was very low grip as you pointed out. I tried the professional 14 day blue masking tape from Wickes and...

What kind of tape sticks to glass?

Hi,

I'm trying to mask off some areas on glass for a paint job. What kind of tape will actually stick to the glass? Is it power duck tape?

Ordinary masking tape doesn't stick (as you proabably know and I didn't!).

Thanks in advance.

Gap in sash window

Hi, I have a sash window that only allows the bottom inside sash to move up and down. The top sash is fixed in place and is not on a cord/pulley system - it is supported by two wooden blocks attached to the inside frame. There is an opening of about 15mm between the top sash and the frame top. Is th...

Thanks all,

I used a very heavy but quite short hammer, wearing goggles, ear defenders, leather gloves and a baseball cap.

I also searched YouTube and found a video which was very useful for a systematic technique (as opposed to smashing it in an erratic way)...

Disposing of Cast-Iron Bath - Safest way?

Hi, I have a very heavy metal bath (possibly cast-iron), and I am having difficulty disposing of it. Scrap metal merchants will not come to collect and say it is worth nothing. Can I break it up into smaller pieces and then scrap? What is the safest way to do this? I have a 9in angle grinder - shall...

Cast iron WC waste pipe

Thanks for your reply. What steps do I need to take to replace the whole cast iron pipe in plastic? The cast starts in my bathroom and extends out towards the front of the house going under the floorboards and beyond; does this job require digging up the driveway?

Cast iron WC waste pipe

Hi, I am constructing a wet room in a victorian property. The WC waste pipe on the ground floor bathroom is made of cast iron and has a thick collar sitting above the wooden flooring. I wish to re-positon the WC waste pipe. What steps should I take? Can I cut into the old pipe below floor level and ...
