KBrownie is spot on, as ugly and unfinished as it may look the job is technically correct providing no exposed conductors and the cables have been clipped and the fuse box doesn't have any broken cable entry points that you can get your fingers in( or various finger sized objects

sounds like the switch wire is missing, any chance of you posting a picture of the wires in the switch and wires at the light, or find a friendly leccie with a tester it shouldn't take long to trace it

you don't say whether you have a RCD that is tripping out, if you do have RCD that is tripping out then its probably being caused by earth leakage in the elements, a range cooker can leak enough mili amps to trip a RCD, if this is the case you have to isolate the circuit away from the rcd get a elec...
