I agree with KB as above. like for like is fine for you to do yourself.
also if this is IP rated it is highly likely this is a type 2 fitting so needs no earth on the casing. read the manufacturers instructions is always the caveat with these things.

it may break your heart, but the laws the law, and you may be expected to provide evidence of conformity if you ever come to sell your house (which you will one day) or for any insurance company in the event of a claim, and problems with either of those really will break your heart!! this work is no...

it certainly sounds to me more like the water system has become live due to a fault. there are a number of possible reasons for this. firstly it could simply be static. you need to measure how much current and volts is actually being produced does the supplier provide a main earth? if so is this att...

as you can see from the replies above, this is far from clear cut. I would say no, but I think some of the others would disagree. my get out with all this when I am working is if the customer doesn't want sockets at these heights I mark it on the installation cert that they have requested not to hav...

it comes under the auspices of the building regs, not the wiring regs (I believe, although I stand to be corrected). As such this applies to new builds, even if it is a 4th floor flat with no disabled access! that leaves a grey area though as to wether this applies to extension works, renovations or...

if you just want to avoid changing fuse wire you can get MCBs which will plug into your existing fuse holders, of course this won't give you RCD protection and isn't upto 17th edition standards, but no reason why you can't do it as a temporary fix. as long as you don't change the spec of any circuit...

pretty much, if your wrong the worst that can hapen is you'll trip the switch (or blow the fuse), although you may take the switch with it as well. the best way though is to test your single black for continuity from the switch. if you don't have a tester to check the continuity from the switch to y...

you'll struggle to get this out without dmaging the plaseter as you will have to lift the box over the conduit. try not to dmage the nuts as last time I did one of these I discovered the new size of nuts just don't quite fit! also bear in mind this conduit maybe supplying your earth, if it isn't it ...

also sometimes properties were wired using single cables in metal trunking, which was used to provide the earth. this can become damaged or corroded leaving you no earth. it depends on whether you mean you can't see an earth wire, or on testing there is no path to earth (earth loop impedence)

this is an area that is very open to interpretation so I don't think you will be far wrong either way.
I'm about to wire up a similar set up on friday and I'll be doing it as an RCD protected fused spur.

yes, the lights work on a loop system, going from one light to the next, so if you leave the cables unconnected the leccie won't go on to the next light. Generally the three red (or brown) cables should go together. you should then have an assortment of black (or blue) cables. if your lucky one of t...

if you look at the back of your appliances on the data card there may be a square within a square symbol. that means it's a type 2 appliance and can be used without an earth, otherwise it's a type 1 and must have an earth. some of the continental wiring is scary, I just came back from my mates in fr...

10A for 4 sockets on a radial, thats woeful!!
best advice as above!
even then you may get nuisance tripping depending on what your running, don't do any welding while the dryers on!that dryers going to pulll a good 12A on it's own probably
