Re: Are my joists strong enough?

I wish to board my loft with 18mm chipboard T&G. It will only be approx. 1 metre around the perimeter, mainly for additional storage space. Looking at previous postings this looks fine to do but what if I decided to board the total floor area? Would the weight of all the flooring AND the storage...

Re: Laminate Floor Underlay

Can somebody please tell me if it is ok to use the existing carpet underlay when laying a new laminate floor?

If this will suffice, then I do not really want to purchase laminate underlay if it is not necessary.

Many thanks,

Roy.

Built In Wardrobe

I am attempting to build a built in single wardrobe with a bi-fold door. I am on quite a tight budget but obviously, do not want to buy trash. Can somebody please advise the best, reasonably priced type of timber to use for the doors ( 7' by 18" ), the shelves and the battening. The doors are t...

Thanks for your quick response.

That sounds like good news for me as they are cheap to buy, but can I still connect the washing machine waste to the anti syphon trap?
If you have smells coming from the sink plughole, the water seal is being broken. This is often caused by the draining water sucking the water from the trap instead of leaving a small quantity in as a seal. Does it gurgle loudly after the bowl has emptied? A cure may be t...
Where does the waste pipe go to ? is it connected to any other waste pipes ? htg
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I live in the flat above ground level. The waste pipe therefore joins the kitchen waste downstairs, before going into the drain. I have enq...

Re: Sink waste smell!

Can somebody please tell me how I might get rid of the nasty bad egg smell that sometimes wafts up from the sink waste? I have checked the u-bend for blockages and the hose that goes to the washing machine. Both were clear but I replaced it anyway and the problem still persists. I'm afraid I know vi...
Roy13, If the use really is for storing light items the 100x50mm joists are adequate. Bearing in mind that you should now have 225mm of loft insulation it would be worth increasing the joist depth so you can increase the insulation depth. end
Thank you for taking...

Floor joist dimensions

I am a novice DIYer and after perusing the Loft Conversion/Boarding Project, it has given me the confidence to attempt boarding the loft myself. However, there is one thing now holding me back. A friend of mine (a competent DIYer) has told me that the floor joists must have a minimum depth of 7"...
