LOL I am a diy'er and I am sure the other trade people will linch me for saying this. I had a complete new central heating and shower system in my small 2 bed flat for about 4.5K about 5 years ago. It was a good recommended company based in p'mouth I think. They had 2 guys work 4.5 days. everything ...

Thank Jimmy, Yes your ideas make sense, But my aim was to over engineer the wiring to a) ensure upto and exceeding standards b) apply best practice where possible. c) Make the job as hard as possible on myself for fun :-) but I have used 6mm because the cable total length of house and swa(10M and 12...

Many thanks, hadn't thought of the neutral cable reduction. Should be able to cut down a few cables.
Part P I have all the books and read up all the details. Enjoy the technical stuff, Beurocracy hummm, nuff said. I may make some changes if and when it requires an inspection.

Sorry I am no sparky and cannot really advice. But you need to tape the live incoming wire to your circuit and not the switched live in the middle of the corridor lights. Try searching for wiring ceiling rose or corridor switches and try and compare your wires to the diagrams. Be careful of live wir...

From the description above you have tapped into the worng wires. As well as that I would imagine the flickering is either from the brown and blue having 240V and hence not enough potential differnece to power the light. Or you have a dimmer switch which causes a buzzing and flickering with energy sa...

Cheers for the replies, As payback for your help I have been lurking in your computers forum to offer advice. I have checked my system and I will have to re-think. I have no isolation before or after the meter. No matter how much learning I can do I am not prepared to change a CU or add a switch fro...

Depending on your situation I would recommend Linux install. It is free and if you get to grips with it a big advantage to have that knowledge and skill in the IT industry. I have heard of many problems with Vista, not to mention if your box is old it is not likely to be able to cope with Vista even...

Can anyone suggest anything I should whatch out for with a new CU.
To me it would appear a simple job of taking the old wiring system and wiring into the new 17th CU. As long as I ensure the connections are good and the wires are in the right place. Is there any gottcha's to look out for?

Thanks, seems a simple job is now wrapped in a lot of expensive beurocracy. Spoken to a couple of industrial sparky mates and we are having real trouble understanding the use or Part P except as a union funded load of paperwork. I am also wondering if it is possible to get any knowledge on how to go...

Old CU for shinney new RCB, MCB CU

Is it possible to change over an old fuse wire type CU with a new CU with RCB and MCB switches? It all works fine at the moment but I don't like having to ensure I have silly amounts of fuse wire and a torch hanging around and if it is a simple switch over it would make life a little easier. The hou...
