I think "yes" to all of my questions, it's called cement board - Versapanel / Hardiebacker are two UK examples, I've since discovered.

Just finished a week long plastering course and forgot to ask if there's any type of boarding I can use (cement or water.res gypsum) to board over a wall outside? We used to have a standard cold cistern / hot cylinder to shower setup. Then they pulled the tanks and put a combi in about ten years ago. The flow rate is terrible. Do you have much experience having work signed off by building control under section P? I'd be interested to know what the experience is like in terms of visit frequeny and costs involved (in calling them out) when it's an entire house rewire.
