Re: Painting sash windows - exterior

Should be fine to do them anytime really so long as you are not expecting it to be frosty before the paint has a chance to dry. Just try to paint them as early in the morning as you can after they have dried from the morning dew or even wipe them yourself to help them dry quicker. As you have left i...

Re: Hanging Wallpaper Horizontally

Hi, no reason at all. You will just need to make sure that it is really straight otherwise it will stand out like a sore thumb. Another thing will be instead of folding the paper as you would normally do when hanging, ie vertically try folding it concertina style and you will find it easier to hang.

Re: painting skirting boards and window sill.....help!

Hi, if you have sanded it all down and filled any bits that need doing then you are ready to start. First of all you will need to prime any bare bits, then give it 1 or 2 undercoats depending on how it covers followed by a topcoat ie gloss, eggshell. In between coats I would give it a very light san...

Re: Wallpaper designs

Hi, just go to your local paint store. I don't mean B & Q or similar a proper paint and decorators store. They will have plenty of wallpaper books to look at and if they are any good the staff there will be able to point you in the right direction as to what you are after. That way you will be a...

Re: Water soluble paint???

You will probably find this is distemper or ceiling white, it's called a few different things. The best thing to do with it is to remove it and yes it will be messy and take quite a while. If you try painting over it the chances are that the new emulsion will just peel off taking the ceiling white w...

Re: To the decorators here

Hi JRS, as with most things these days loyalty doesn't seem to count for much. I have always used Dulux paints myself usually the trade paints with gloss etc. Over the years I have always found that the Dulux oil based gloss isn't as white as the crown one but it is thicker and more hard wearing. Ne...

Re: painting a newly plastered ceiling ,help have messed it

Hi happyhour, you needed to mist coat them first. This is why the paint is peeling off. You will probably be better off scraping the first layer off, it should come off fairly easily as it doesn't sound like it has adhered properly. If you put the second coat on the bare patches without mist coating...

Re: Painting of Kitchen unit doors

Hi mikey, yes you should be able to use ordinary paint on them. Make sure that you give them a thorough clean first to make sure any grease is off them. Then prepare them as usual for painting, then prime undercoat and topcoat. I don't think I would use either of the paint finishes that you mention ...

Re: Coving on Coving

The way I was reading it was that the new ceiling has been put in covering up the top of the coving so that only the bottom of it is now showing. If this is the case then removing the old stuff is not easy to do and putting new over it should work fine as long as it fits well to the wall and ceiling...

Re: Problems with Dulux Primer Sealer over distemper

It does sound like you should do as you did the first time and get it all off and start from scratch. Now that you have put on a sealer you are going to have to break that seal. Maybe use something like one of these just so that you can get some moisture behind it. (Google "tooled-up.com/SubCat...

Re: Hanging lining paper

Another answer could be that the size is just soaking straight into the plaster and it needs another coat or 2 of it just to seal the walls properly. If you want you could always get the walls reskimmed, that way you would have good surface to work off.

Re: smooth paint for uneven walls

I think you are going to have to fill the holes and cracks first otherwise they will just be back as soon as any paint you put on dries and maybe look worse than it did in the first place. There just aren't any shortcuts to preparation if you want it to look right. As JRS says if the walls are not i...

Re: Bubbled paint

Hi rimce44, a mist coat is not just for newly plastered walls and ceilings. It is often used on walls or ceilings that have been painted before but not been done for a while and so the emulsion soaks in too quickly and can cause this problem as could be the case here or if the walls hadn't been mist...

Re: priming for wallpaper

Hi wildm, before papering you will need to size the walls with a coat of watered down paste or you can buy a pack of size and use that. Having given the walls a coat of emulsion first will make this easier to apply as it won't soak in so quickly.
