you shouldnt come across any problems at all mate, there should be a timber or concrete lintel above the frame to support the brickwork above so that wont be a problem.

the chances are that the screws weren't screwed into studs in the wall or are screwed into a joint in the block work.When the timber is moving (growing and shrinking) it maybe working its way off the wall

mortice lock

i think you'd be best off taking the lock out and having a look inside, chances are the lock mechanism inside has rusted up and jammed.

do the bolts have a thread on them? if not and they are just a smooth shank just knock them in gently with a hammer

i would strongly advise against re-aligning your staircase with the two existing parts, as this would be weakening the structure when joined back together.If it's enclosed between two walls from top to bottom, it is possible to re-connect these two parts although it will require a sufficient amount ...
