Re: Adding Second Light Fixture to Loft Lights

Thank you Mr White. So I just need to add the new cable by connecting the live wire into the existing light at the same connection point as the live wire of the existing cable (and the same for the neutral)? So the existing light will then have two live going into the live connection, and two neutra...

Adding Second Light Fixture to Loft Lights

Dear DIYers, It's been a few years since my last post, but since then all the DIY I've needed to do has been within my own limits so I've not needed your excellent help. However, I would like some simple advice on the following. I have a single switch in the landing that operates a single light in t...

Bizarre problem with toilet

I have no clue why this is happening - it makes no sense to me. Hopefully it does to someone else here... We have a large (underground) rain water tank. This connected to the house's water system and allows us to have rain water coming out of the (cold water) tap in our utility room and to flush eac...

Diolch yn fawr.

Pity - I was sure there would be a way.

But then, nothing is ever that simple...

Tilt and turn windows: draught and noise

We have uPVC tilt and turn windows that are three years old (as is the house in fact). The other day, with a strong and very cold wind blowing, I could feel a draught coming through one of the windows. It's not strong - not enough to move the curtains for example - but it's there. This probably expl...

Battery operated?? That sounds like the solution. I've searched a bit and found something by Phillips called "SpotOn" which have a motion detector. According to the reviews on Amazon they're very bright and switch off automatically...and also are NOT very bright and do NOT switch off autom...

Adding lamps/spots to existing circuit

After some excellent advice a while back on newly plastered walls, I'm hoping someone here can help with another question. We're in the process of settling in to our newly built house. This entails (along with many other things!) installing ceiling lamps. Between our bedroom and en-suite shower room...

Filling nail holes in door frames for clear varnish finish

After some very helpful advice from theshedman on painting new plaster, I joked about needing advice on doors. Now it seems I DO need some help so I hope someone here can... Our new house has untreated beech doors/frames. The door frames, naturally, have some nail holes which we'd like to fill. Unfo...

Once again, thanks! I'm pretty sure I have it now... My original thought was that after I'd prepared the walls (using light sandpaper to get rid of marks and even out the surface) that it would better to use white paint (like the plaster). Then, when I later filled in any settlement cracks with (whi...

Many thanks "theshedman" - that's really helpful. Just one thing - and sorry if this sounds dense - when you say "touch up" the hairline cracks I assume you mean with "filler"? If so then I suppose we should stick with white/off-white emulsion for now until those cracks...

Thanks for the reply - much appreciated. We would love to paint the walls with our final colour asap but I'm concerned that it would be more difficult to touch up any cracks that appear over the next 12 months. Yes, it is a little strange no painting whatsoever was done - that was a little "sur...

Painting newly plastered walls

Firstly, hello from a newbie. I hope someone here can help as the more I search the internet for advice on this, the more confused I get... We've just moved in to a newly constructed house. The plaster on the walls is, of course, all new. It's white (we're in Belgiuim - apparently they don't use the...
