Joining stairs to skirting ?

At the top of the stairs the side rail is plain. I have 5" torus running round the landing. How do i make the join between the 2 ?

Do I have to cut off 2" of skirting and run it down the side of the stairs to make a seemless joint.

Torus skirting to stairs ?

I am removing all the old pencil round skirting in my 1960's house and replacing with 5" Torus. I have come unstuck and become perplexed with the finish to thetop of the stairs ? Basically I have a standard MDF stair running straight up but there is no moulding on the stairs. How do I finish th...
