Need advice on removing chipboard floor.

I am replacing my chipboard floor in the hall with T&G. It's a 70's house and the board goes under the skirting and next to the understairs cupboard it goes under the stud wall there. So I cannot just ease the boarding up and I also have to remove the brads which I'm doing by drilling at the sid...

Loading in loft.

I am fitting a new cold tank and will be raising it above the joist on a new platform. This consists of joists spanning 3.6m but there is a load bearing wall mid way which in fact the current tank sits on. I intend to provide a structure to support the new joists down to this wall. I calculated a fu...

Turn off the mains and wait a bit. Go into the loft and listen and trace if possible. If quite put a largish scredriver on the mains tap (still off) and put the handle gently to your forehead. You will/should "hear" the noise. This may be a leak up to your house. If there turn off the stre...

I had an underfloor battery for a Car Radio in my lounge. Works if mains has gone for about a week. The charger I used was a Halfords one so why not just go the same way? I had mine on a timer to charge for 1 hour once per day.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply. I query because I am keen on my system which hasn't been touched for 40 years, to be safe. I have one of those plug in mains testers which gives an OK signal but of course that does not test the system earthing - just the "local" earth in the socket. I w...

Earthing.

I have a TN-C-S (I think!) and the earth is connected to the mains water pipe where the plastic water mains enters the building. I have just cleaned this "strap", retightened and check with an ohm meter that there is conductivity to one of the power socket earth terminals. I see also that ...

Thanks ericmark for your advice. I will proceed as advised. My intention is to provide a socket outlet for the wm/c and a supply (other socket only allowed I presume) to a Dimplex economy unit feeding a wired timeswitch and then into the oil radiator.

I want to put a washing machine at one end of our cloakroom (2.5m x 0.9m) fed from a spur with a point adjacent. Also need a Dimplex oil filled rad next to the Toilet. I need to bring a spur in throgh a wall and take one way to a fused point for the rad. and another away to the other end for the m/c...

Felt Garage Roof Edging

I have a flat roofed detached garage. The edge parts are going through and I wondered if one can buy pre-formed edge peices instead of fixing felt and bending it over. Any ideas?

CU nearly full and need to add circuits.

I have read many of the posts for garages. I want to install a 4mm armoured cable and have the following I need advice on: 1. Firstly on the MCB (bus fed from 100A switch) side of the CU (split unit) I have: - Door bell - Cooker - Central Heating (I assume just the boiler circuit). - Lights up - Lig...

Parts for consumer unit.

I have a CU with a breaker code DZ47. Where can I get parts for this unit as I want to extend it?

There are a couple of spare "16" rated breakers. What type of circuit are these for (the ring circuits are on "32" rated breakers)?

Free drawing programs?

I had a quick look here but not immediatly apparent. Anyone know of a good program for basic plans suitable for Building Control and perhaps one for 3-D views?
