ReVarnishing an Outdoor Table and Chairs - Varnish Stripper or Sand Off?

I would like to restore an outdoor table and chairs which have a varnish finish which is worn in places. Do I use some sort of varnish stripper, do I sand off all the old varnish, or both? Do I use a stained varnish? what sort would be best for outdoors?
Any advice would be most welcome

removing silicone mastic

My husband has just fitted a sink into a worktop and used clear silicone mastic which is now on the worktop all around the sink. How can I get this off, without of course damaging the standard formica type worktop.
Thanks for any suggestions

Many thanks Shedman

I have neglected to say that these beams are new wood put in a couple of years ago, standard interior stuff and not some ancient timbers.
Is the advice still the same?
Thanks very much for your thoughts

Thank you Stoneyboy - If I use an oil based primer/undercoat can I then use a white emulsion on top of that? the spaces between beams is plasterboard and I want to paint the entire ceiling white.

Primer or undercoat for wood?

I have beams and want to paint the ceiling white.

The wooden beams must have been treated I guess, so do I need to use a primer on the wood before painting with emulsion or is an undercoat for wood the best thing or do I need any sort of undercoat?

Grateful for any advice.

Thanks very much again shedman. I have had a go and, of course, have managed to get caulk on the stone - which of course is a red sandstone type so it shows - it's Ok where the gap is small to do it clean but not with a larger gap. I'll try to remove it with a knife perhaps - otherwise when I paint ...

Is decorators caulk the right thing to be using?

We have stone surrounds to the inside of our windows and there are gaps of varying size all around where the plasterboard meets the stone.
Is it ok to fill in the gaps with decorators caulk or should I be using something else?
Thanks for any advice

Thanks for your advice - The coat of clear varnish does sound a good idea.
The surface was marked by just having a lamp on it too so I don't think it was a good finish to start with.

Protecting a painted surface

I bought a painted wooded bedside table and the top is now covered in ring marks and other marks so that I need to recover it somehow. If I repaint it what is the best way of subsequently protecting the surface?
