How thin can I lay concrete on a floor. Help please, urgent!

I'm doing work on my house and the top coating on the floor (floor has a concrete slab then a top 'smooth' layer about 12mm to 15mm thick ontop of it) it's this smooth layer which is cracking and loose. The self leveling compounds I've seen only state 10mm as a maximum and these bags are very expens...

Floor damp proofing

I'm working on my house and removed some skirting by the front door, the cavity was blocked so took the bricks out and cleaned out as best I could. The floor in the area is cracked and loose (the top screed, about 12mm thick) so I have had to remove some of it. (Its backed with bitumenous paper.) Th...

Great, thanks for the reply.

i a bit annoyed by the attitude of some of the joinery's near me, asking for advice and told to gripfit it. Also they used biro to mark out a curve on some of the sills for the doors.

What Nails to use in Oak?

Hello, I having oak window sills and architrave fitted, I'm wondering what nails/screws should be used to fit it?

(I seem recall seeing that certain types metal can react with the oak to prduce a staining)

Please dont tell me to use gripfit.

PVC DPM around fireplace

Hello, I'm considering lifting the 'top layer of self leveled flooring' in my living room. It appears to me that the damp proof of the floor is made from a tar impregnated sheet. This appears to be starting to breakdown. If I replace with a plastic membrane and a new 'top layer' (sorry I dont know w...

Ideally an unused chimney should have ventilation to help prevent damp. Do you know if the chimney was sweep before been sealed?? Please correct me if I'm wrong - could the yellow stain be caused by old soot in the chimney 'seeping' through if getting damp due to condensation. I've heard that you ca...

Personally, i've just put flooring down on the area where I am storing items, and over the stair well (just felt safer doing that).

As long as you're aware not to tread there then IMO its OK.
I'd be pleased to hear otherwise - as I'd have to do more of my attic then!

I'm sure you'll get better suggestions - but i'd say get a mate round to help and use a couple of crow-bars, protect your floorboards with a scrap piece of timber and try levering the plyboard up.

Best way to clean wood

I've bought oak sills and returns for my new windows, they've been in upstairs room whilst i've been knocking the plaster off in downstairs and in the bathroom, they have got a coating of dust on them (depsite covered in plastic). Whats the best way to clean them off ready for varnish? dust them ove...

To add to the above, I'm knocking the plaster off the walls, but if I lay a new floor should I lay it as close to the brick wall as possible? or to the 'old plaster line'?

many thanks,

Tar layer under the floor

I've just removed the carpet and underlay from a room (its was there when bought the house). the floor is 'oily' I noticed in a patch where the concrete was broken around the fireplace that there appears to be a tar impregnated fibre layer under the concrete - I'm guessing this is 1950's damp proofi...
