Replacing floorboards with ?

My large room measures 25 feet x 15 feet. Examination of the floorboards indicates they are in poor condition. All the boards squeek, they are all warped or bowed across their width and some boards are damaged. Also I want to spend money to silence the sound of my noisy neighbour's music from the fl...

Use of CFL light bulb inside IP44 fitting

I want to put an energy saving "CFL" light bulb inside an existing IP44 enclosed wall light. Currently the wall light has a standard "incandescent" 40W light bulb. The CFL bulb is about the same size as the normal bulb, runs at 7W and claims to last ten times as long. Is it safe ...

Cliff, For your power socket, it sounds like you are choosing the wall mounted route instead of the flush mounted route. This approach involve buying a different fitting to your metal back box. You buy a wall mounted plastic box fitting ( pattress ? ) and attach this directly to the brick/plaster an...

Thank you for that Ohm figure Blakey.

I just browsed the IET website. The "Domestic Installer" guide has a table that seems to say that if your multimeter gives a reading of around 1 Ohm you have a ring main, if your multimeter gives a reading of around 2 Ohms you have a radial circuit.

How to test if I've got a ring main or radial

With my floorboards up I'm finding it difficult to tell if I have a radial arrangement or a ring main in my flat. At the CU, the whole arrangement is off a 30AMP MCB. Under the floorboards two 3 terminal junction boxes are visible so far. The two junction boxes are connected by 25mm cable. These jun...

Thank you for the guidance on depth and height when chasing into brick and plaster. With the new SDS box sinkers and an average hammer drill it is all to easy to chew too large a hole into masonry. I would add that the depth of the back box that you need is largely determined by your choice of flush...

Thank you Blakey I understand what you say.

To solve the problem of overheating, If I uprated all the junction boxes to 30A and replaced all 2.5mm cable with 4mm ( total rewire ) that would fix the problem. That way I could still embed the wiring inside the insulation.

What do you think?

IP regs : Kitchen Sink ?

I am choosing a wall light to install roughly 1 metre above my kitchen sink. The fitting will be something like this : No external links allowed, idiots keep trying to get free advertising. Since it's a kitchen, do I have to observe the Zones 1,2 and 3 for electrics near water ? Do the water ingress...

Rockwool + 2.5mm fire risk ?

I'm in a flat above a noisy neighbour. I want to install acoustic insulation between the flats by cramming rockwool into the area between my floor joists. I have started taking up my floorboards and have found various cables, spurs and junction boxes. I'm assuming these are a combination of my mains...

Elsewhere on this forum, 10 meters of head is roughly 1 bar. Using the formula above for 10 metres of head and approximating gravity as 10 instead of 9.81 gives 10 metres of head x 10 gravity x 1000 density = 100,000 pascals = 1 bar The conversion of pascals to bar by dividing by 100,000 is confirme...

cold water feed ?

I live in a flat and have no access to the water tank(s) in the roof. How can I tell if the cold water in my flat is fed a) directly from the mains or b) from a cold water tank in the roof I am about to install a shower pump and am not allowed to fit a pump to the mains. So I need to verify where my...
