Hello, We have a standard Victorian mid terrace 3 bed house, with downstairs bathroom out the back. We recently put in an upstairs shower room and the plumber we used was awful, he didn't know what he was doing. Having finished it off ourselves and water turned on, old cast iron stink / vent pipe re...

Rising damp conflicting suggestions from builders

Hi, in my Victorian mid-terrace house, the kitchen has never been heated and so it's cold and we're in process of renovating and there seems to be some condensation on the interior walls, with the outside wall possibly damp and a chimney breast with crumbling mortar coming off the bricks. 1. Damp pr...

Moving bath and sink waste pipes in a concrete floor

Hello, In installing a new bathroom the sink waste pipe needs to be moved about 25cm, and the bath waste pipe needs to be moved about 50cm (from the head to the middle of the bath) the bath is a claw foot bath so we don't want pipes showing underneath. The floor is concrete, our plumber is reluctant...

Removing cement lumps from old fireplace hearth tiles??

Hi, i've just removed an old 1950's ceramic tile monstrosity of a fireplace...how heavy??! Anyway underneath the base there is a tiled hearth, the victorian original, with small floral tiles, but they're covered in a thinnish but clumpy layer of cement?? Is there any product i can use to get rid of ...

Is my electrician dodgy?

Hi, a Federation of Master Builders firm i am using for my house renovation recommended an electrician for the house rewire, they have used him for years and say he's very competent and reliable, he seems fine and his price is reasonable (i think) based on two quotes I got, but oddly his quote altho...
