Re: wiring up a switch for lights

It may well be possible, even as simple as putting 2 wires in the same switch! BUT they would need to be on the same circuit from the consumer unit and wired in the same way.
Need more info as to what wires are in existing switches. regards Sparx (rtd)

Re: Determining the amp rating of an MCB and circuit

simple answer to a simple question would be nice......but! CSA is cross sectional area which means measuring the diameter of each strand of the cable with a micrometer, times Pi D/2 times the number of strands!!! OR looking at the cable size and comparing it with a cable coming from a 16A mcb which ...

Re: Trip telltale

hi, have done similar by fitting a mains Neon indicator across the mcb ie from bussbar side to cable side, when mcb closed indicator is bypassed but when tripped light is in series with load and lights up. This was as an aid to locating a fault and not permanent as when tripped the neon will still a...

Re: bathroom extractor fan installation

Hi. Two points here, first all work in bathrooms is notifiable to LABC so not DIY legal! second the fan is connected at the light fitting not the switch as there is no neutral at the light switch. It would be possible for a registered electrician to take a supply from the shower switch via an unswit...

Re: Changing from Fluorescent lights to spotlights in kitche

Hi,
to answer the question of switching,

your current set up has one light being switched from both ends (ie 2way) with the second light wired as an extention from the first.
It is almost impossible to change to what you want without some rewiring in the loft.

Re: wiring up two strip lights

Hi, slightly worried that you are wiring mains supplies with so little basic knowledge..... All lights must be in parallel so they have 230v at each, otherwise would only have 115v (ish) each. There is a drawing on this site showing connections under 'projects-wiring lights' . Usual method is to run...

Re: how to connect a double pole oven hood switch to mains

Hi, as this is a kitchen any wiring alterations/additions are covered by LA Building regs part p which effectively means not legal DIY. However if as you say single socket is where you want the hood then why not change it for a Fused Connection Unit(previously known as a switched /fused spur) with a...

Re: Lawnmower trips MCB

Hi, all valid comments from ericmark again. Looking at the rating of 1800w thats roughly 2.4HP, quite large and should draw 7.8 amps on load. However as ericmark says inrush starting current will be 5-6 times that for a short time. To protect the motor/circuit from overload don't put in higher curre...

Re: Boiler pressure rising in Ideal Logic + 30

Hi, as the filling loop is not connected that removes first thought!! I wonder if you have a conventional system with a hot water storage tank ie not a combi? if so most likely thing would be a pinhole in the heating coil inside tank allowing mains pressure from hot water to get back into heating sy...

Re: 17th Edition. Where do all the bits go?

Hi as you say regs have changed! Not withstanding all above comments the fact is that if you want to DIY the job then LABC MUST be informed before you start any such work and an inspection fee around £220 paid up front. They will then employ someone to inspect the wiring routes etc before making goo...

Hi, In my opinion your night time 'set back' temp. is already too high! Normally 16 is a more than adequate night temp. which a reasonable system will be able to raise back to day temp in a few minutes. Unless of course you are in the habit of being up for long periods in the 'wee' small hours (Pun ...

Re: wiring a two gang two way light switch

Hi, start downstairs: Find layout of switches ie com +l1&l2 for each half of plate, normally Com is opposite its L1,L2 connections put black into one of the L1 terms and the red from the same 2core into opposite Com. with all other wires safely out of the switch and into choc-bloc for safety, tu...
