Tips sought on aligning the two screws of a simple switch wallplate with the hard-to-see screwholes in the receptacle.

I find it quite difficult to get the second screw to engage with the hard-to-see threaded hole in the buried receptacle. I'm curious about others deal with it and all ideas would be very welcome.

Mysterious Tap Action With Sink Combi Tap

I lie awake at night fretting over a problem with the action of my sink's combi cold tap. When I open it, the flow stays very low and after another turn or so, the tap feels as though it's binding. Woggling it back and forth a few times eventually frees it, restoring normal action. Oddly, it can als...

Re: Basic Central Heating Opperating Principles

Thank you, KDM, for your reply which I unfortunately missed in 2008. It turned out that my radiators were actually connected in parrallel so I no longer found the valve actions hard to understand. I seem to have a way of wrongly expecting complication (such as radiators being in series) when matters...

Re: Basic Central Heating Opperating Principles

Thanks very much for your reply, collectors, but I need to understand how it is possible to regulate or balance individual radiators which are connected as a chain, by simple valves only able to restrict the flow. Maybe I don't understand something about the valve actions - I'm wondering whether per...

Basic Central Heating Opperating Principles

I'm sure the answers to this are well known but can't find them. Please tell me if I'm wrong to believe that: 1. in a simple basic domestic modern central heating system, the radiators are connected 'in series' ('daisy-chained'), saving much copper. 2. therefore the Individual radiator thermostats a...

Re: Using a short Immersion heater thermostat - advice needed

Thank you, stoneyboy, for your interest. I think you may be thinking I would use a short immersion heater . I wanted to know the effect of using a short thermostat with a normal long heater. My long thermostat actually recovered, so I checked the vertical water temperature profile in the cylinder (b...

Re: Raising Bath Water Level by Adjusting Overflow

Thank you, thedoctor, for your interest and advice. The modification raised the overflow level by about 3 cm with taps closed and by about a further 3 cm to about 2 cm below the bath top with both taps fully open and giving a total flow rate of about 15 l/min (low head in my flat). The top of the pi...

Using a short Immersion heater thermostat - advice needed

My flat's immersion heater thermostat has failed and is too long to remove because its top is only 9in directly below the water tank's base. If I get it out (bent) then replace it with a 7in thermostat, will using a long immersion heater with a short thermostat at least be safe? I'd also be very gla...

Raising Bath Water Level by Adjusting Overflow

I like wallowing in a deep bath but the only suggestions offered for increasing the depth required blanking the overflow and losing its valuable function. I tried twisting the elbow at the top of the flexible overflow pipe to point about 45deg upward, making the flexible pipe loop up before descendi...

Re: What would make a shower curtain pull into the tub when you

Anticipating this problem with my bath's shower curtain, I tried mounting the curtain's rail directly above the outermost side edge of the tub. The curtain is light and has no edge weights, yet remains snug against the bath wall during showering.

Re: PUSH-ON CAP UNSCREWED

Thank you plumbob, I called in at Allbits, our very helpful local supplier, who demonstrated how the cap can slide while the projecting end of its inner (toothed) collar is pushed in. It can be difficult keeping on top of this stuff when one only does a plumbing task about once every 30 years.

PUSH-ON CAP UNSCREWED

Photo shows two flexible pipes with push-on couplers to 22mm copper pipes. Noticing the bottom cap of the far one was loose, I unthinkingly unscrewed it upon which it slid down the pipe and won't come up again - perhaps it also has a toothed collar? The top part seems secure and completely dry but c...

COOKER GAS SUPPLY - CHINESE PUZZLE

Largely out of curiosity, please could someone enlighten me on this one: I am changing from a gas to an electric cooker for my flat and a fitter will need to cap off the old cooker gas supply. This comprises an iron pipe emerging vertically from MDF covering the concrete floor. At the top of the pip...
