Alan,

Not sure if torus would be politcally correct for the age/style of your house but plain bullnose sounds like a big no to me.

Kitchen cabinet crown moulding compound cut

Been pulling out what little hair I have left this afternoon. I have a Bosch 10" sliding mitre saw which can cut compound mitres with ease. Problem I'm having is that following the instructions from Bosch the joint just doesn't work, it ends up wider at the top than the bottom. The instructions...

Alarm system modification

Hi all, Apologies if this is in the wrong forum or an faq as the search facility turned up nothing. Basically I want to know if I can swap out sensors etc without tripping the alarm if the alarm system is inactive? Also I need to cut a cable (so I can run it under the floorboards) and reconnect it, ...

Just bought a new switch and fitted it, no problem now!

cheers

Thanks for the reply, What I meant to say was that I think a 2w switch has been used where a 1w switch was required, I've come across a few cases where there is what I might call a patch wire across terminals which were obviously not there when the switch was bought. Is it common practice to convert...

Hi Bob, I'm not a qualified sparkie, but I have had two conservatorys built and wired by pro's. What they usually do is to take a spur off the nearest socket on the ring which leads directly to a fused connection unit in the conservatory. My copy of the regs says that you can do more or less what yo...

Faulty pull switch

Hi all, The pull switch in the bathroom seems to have acquired a mind of its own. First pull the lights flicker miserably, second they go off and the third time they come on fine. Fourth pull switches them off. Just a guess but could it be a 2 way switch which has a fault on one side? There is a 2nd...

Ralph, I suspect that there is a misunderstanding here due to jargon, most folk know that rendering is the stuff that the outside walls of your house might be plastered with. With the recent (ok in the last 20 years) popularity of using plasterboard to "dry line" interior walls, you will f...

Hi, I take it that you mean you removed a door which was 44mm thick and that the rebate in your door lining is also 44mm wide? Your new door is presumably only 32mm thick? So, to avoid having a 12mm gap between your new door and the "stop" in the lining you have 2 options. 1) Replace the d...

Hi, I bought a Spear & Jackson trowel and hawk some 17 years ago and they have had a fair bit of use over the years. I don't think you can buy these anymore but general advice is.... My trowel (float) has been used for both base coat and finish, if possible try to use one for each. I found that ...

Well I guess I've worked this one out, doing the 2 pole test I have effectively shorted the phase wire to earth via the metal box or the brickwork. The reduced voltage being the result of the resistance of the localised building material. A single pole test of the back box shows no sign of voltage w...

Wall is live around socket?

Hi all, I'm no newcomer to electrics and recently I bought myself a continuity/voltage tester to add to my toolkit. I have just moved a double socket from its original position surface mounted on the skirting board to a more suitable location 18 inches above the floor (as per regs) and flush mounted...
