This is a bit puzzling. I'm wiring a light switch in my kitchen, when i connect the lives from the ring to the live for the light, the earth cable is also living-up. Difficult to say unless you specify meters. If you're wanting cheapest, use plastic push fit piping, copper is pretty expensive at the minute. Push-fit fittings cost more than copper but there twice as quick to fit, with half the mess.
