Re: Weeping compression joint on gate valves

Just a quick update on this, I purchased some 3/4" olives at a whopping cost of 73 pence a piece! After putting them on and getting it all handtight, I then opened the water and tightened until the weeping stopped, which it did. I've left a piece of dry toilet tissue wrapped round the joint, th...

Re: How do you know a soldered joint is watertight?

Thanks again, I never knew what a U gauge or air pressure test kit was until now :) Looking around it seems that for commercial grade wet plumbing (m) air testing is essential, likewise for gas; in my case it's only wet domestic plumbing (radiators, water supply) this is for so that I have the confi...

Re: Weeping compression joint on gate valves

Hi htg engineer, Thanks for the response, I've just done some eyeballing of some of the old pipe off cuts compared to some new 22mm pipe. As you hinted, it would appear the old pipe is 3/4"! I tested this by deburring the ends of the pipes and sliding a 22mm olive over the end. On the 3/4"...

Re: How do you replace a cold water pipe isolation valve?

Oh, check the obvious too before any of that in the last post...did someone simply close the existing isolation valve? If so, turn it open, then fill the kettle and have a cuppa tea! :)

Re: How do you replace a cold water pipe isolation valve?

It's push fit, find the main stop cock/tap into the house close it - you may need to find the one outside the house and turn off your water supply from there if you can't find it, but look hard sometimes they are well hidden or, so seized up WD40 might help. Run the kitchen tap, make sure your water...

How do you know a soldered joint is watertight?

It may seem like a silly question, but how do you know a soldered joint it good enough to be water tight? I've done everything right, I've cut, de-burred, cleaned, fluxed and soldered but is there any sort of tool I'm missing to do that last check before putting water into the joint? It would save a...

Weeping compression joint on gate valves

Hi there, I'm new here, so firstly thanks for the great site it's really helpful. I've recently replaced the cold water tank in the loft with a 70 gallon polytank, that's fine properly supported and lagged :) but I'm having a slight problem with some 22mm compression fitting gate valves I installed ...
