Valves Gummed up?

I have several water supply valves which don't turn off. 1 Two 50 gal tanks in loft with outlet 22mm valves (brass). When I turn them fully off (they go all the way) water still comes out of the bath tap (not mains). Is there a quick fix? I would need some sort of bung to stop the flow in both so i ...

Possible radiator airlock?

I have a rad in an upstairs bedroom which gurgles loudly when the heating starts. Its a bit variable and can go on a bit. The rad does get hot. An extension was added from the pipes adjacent to this rad to feed a rad in the room below although I'm not sure that is the problem. I have bled the rad an...

Re: Sewer outlet Backflow.

Thanks yes I have now identified such. I can see problems with this clogging up and needing servicing as i guess anything 'obstructing' the flow would do. To push it in then having to remove it to clean the entry area seems awkward. Don't think there is a way round this problem. Any views or experie...

Sewer outlet Backflow.

I live in an area where sewage backup is likely to occur. My ground floor toilet needs one but the outlet is vertically into a concrete floor. So I need to fit one just outside where the clay pipe travels under the lawn before the first shared manhole. I see on Amazon this product https://www.amazon...

Loft Party Wall

I want to do a loft conversion. There is one party wall which is of cavity concrete block and has a dual chimney built in which are lined for oil boiler and stove (mine). Is there a way of insulating the party wall (cavity not filled currently) without getting a Party Wall Agreement? The adjacent lo...

Re: DIY Velux Rooflight

Hi omits, Yes the new rafters must rest on purlins or on the ridge plate at the top if there is no upper purlin. The interlocking tiles are easy to remove but try to set the velux so you have complete or near complete tiles at the sides. Regards S [quote="stoneyboy"] Yes ood point even if...

Re: DIY Velux Rooflight

Yes thanks I will look into that. I guess they have to stretch between cross members for support and maybe not the entire length of the rafters.

One difficulty is removing the heavy concrete tiles which are the Marley flat versions.

DIY Velux Rooflight

I am hoping to build a room in my loft. I want to do this slowly and thought I would put in the rooflight first. The roof is bitumen underlay (done in the 1970s) with concrete tile which interlock. I want to do this from the inside. What considerations should I be thinking of if you experts think th...

Re: Big Hole Where Water Pipes Come out of House

If the pipes are sloping downwards when exiting the wall then rain will tend not to run into the wall. That's the first thing to check. He may be willing to fill the hole with mortar so ask him and that will also stop rain. You of course need to check the pipes are not leaking inside the wall.

Sound From Outside And Neighbours After New Chimney Liner Installed

I have just put in a new chimney liner (SS). Because its a shared stack I am finding that now we get reflected sound down the chimney from (mainly) the neighbours chimney and sounds from outside. I am about to repoint the chimney and wondered if there was a way of deflecting sound from reflecting do...

woodburners chimney insulation.

When the liner is fitted and the register plate is installed, I am wondering about the relative merits of using vermiculite fibreboard to prevent the (now) enclosed space from heating up and wasting heat. I would put the fibreboard just above the register plate (perhaps glue it to it). The chimney i...
