Re: How to Identify What's in a Pipe - Unidentified Capped 15mm Copper Pipe

Thanks proptech, Good advice, but how can a Gas Safe Engineer determine it's contents without opening it? How can I make sure HE doesn't end up flooding the house instead of me? If he pops the end off and water gushes out, then it's going to be very hard switching it off if there a no glues about wh...

Electrical Work Carried out After 2005 but no Paperwork Provided?

Hi, About 3 years ago I bought a 1960’s era house. I now want to upgrade the kitchen, and I need to add 4 more double sockets. From what I’ve read about ‘part P’ and the IET wiring regs I need to get an electrician in to do this work. I got a local electrician in to quote for the work, the problem i...

Re: Certification of Electrical Work - Does the Electrician Have to do the Work?

Thanks for the comprehensive reply ericmark. It sounds like the bureaucrats have got themselves thoroughly embedded in the process - but none of this extra paperwork makes me feel any safer! From what you're saying it sounds like the most practical option is to get an electrician around before I sta...

Certification of Electrical Work - Does the Electrician Have to do the Work?

Hi, I have a couple of questions about certifying work done on home wiring. I want to do some work on a ring main, I understand that building regs require this work to be certified by an electrician. Does the electrician have have to actually DO the work, or can I do the work myself and ask him to c...

How to Identify What's in a Pipe - Unidentified Capped 15mm Copper Pipe

Hi, I'm doing some work on my kitchen, and want to install a gas hob. Very close to where I want the gas hob, there is an unidentified 15mm copper pipe that pops out of the floor and is capped with a compression end-stop. Does anyone know how I can safely identify what's in it? The pipe is miles awa...

Electric Oven Above Floor Mounted Potterton Gas Boiler?

Hi, I have an old floor mounted potterton gas boiler in my kitchen, I'm planning to fit a new kitchen, and would like to put a built in electric oven immediately above the boiler. I've been cautioned that this may not be allowed, but I'm unable to get a definitive answer. What I've read so far sugge...

Re: Replacing a Traditional Floor Standing Boiler with a Wall Mounted System Boiler

Thanks proptech, I've just had two more quotes, both from engineers who seem to belong to the 'pipes is pipes' school of plumbing. Neither have suggested replacing the pipes to/from the H/W tank! I guess either the first guy knows something the other two didn't, OR he was feeding me a line. Thanks f...

Re: Replacing a Traditional Floor Standing Boiler with a Wall Mounted System Boiler

Thanks for your input proptech, As an engineer myself, I always find it hard it to accept the "just trust me" answer, I much prefer to have an understanding of the reasons for a given solution. I guess the problem is that I know the design requires a pipe from the boiler to the hot water t...

Replacing a Traditional Floor Standing Boiler with a Wall Mounted System Boiler

Hi, I want to replace a traditional floor-standing gas boiler (pumped radiators and gravity fed hot water system) with a new wall mounted system boiler. I’ve checked the plumbing behind the boiler and am reasonably confident that that I’ve identified the various pipes. There’s an out and return pair...
