Do Newly Plastered Walls Crack and Should They be Lined With Paper

Hi all, We're getting our house plastered and and we just want a paint finish on it. However, some decorators and plasterers have said cracks may start to appear in the plaster even weeks after its done. Is it a good idea to leave the plaster bare and paint or would most people at least use lining p...

Finishing Plasterboard Pipe Boxing but not Using Plaster

Hi all, Does anyone have any advice on finishing a plasterboard pipe box in a kitchen but not using plaster? I need to seal the edges of the box with something and cover the screws but they are protruding a bit, maybe I can get them flush. Ideally i'd like to be able to access the box without destry...

Sash Windows and Accessing the Sash Weights

Hi all, I need to access the sash weights of my windows but i'm not able to open the jamb pocket cover. I've attached a diagram showing what i think is the shape of the cover, definitely mitred in the direction shown at the top but appears square at the bottom but something is preventing it levering...

Fitting Easy Clean Simplex Hinges to Sash Windows

Hi all, I want to fit the easy clean system (simplex ) 2 hinges to our large wooden sash windows so we can open them like casement windows for cleaning. The lower sashes are 106cm W x 125cm L and they have 2 panes separated by a central glazing bar. I know there are guidelines for positioning hinges...

How to Insulate Exposed Stone Wall in Kitchen With no Heating

Hi all, Our kitchen is very cold as it has no heating installed. The kitchen is on an outside wall and in places where I can get in behind appliances I can see the exposed stone and i'd like to somehow insulate these exposed areas of wall. One issue is that there are pipes quite close to the wall in...

Re: Ceiling Mounted Recirculating Fans for Kitchen Without Window

Yes I think I've read about these heat recovery units, still don't seem that common in the UK. I've never seen an installed one for example but not seen that many new properties to be fair. I wish people would just stick to building regulations, they're there for a reason. If you make a mess of elec...

Re: Ceiling Mounted Recirculating Fans for Kitchen Without Window

The reason I ask is that my neighbour has a kitchen with no window and they have a fan in the ceiling, a bit smaller than a shoe box. The nearest wall to it has no protrusions from the outside at all as there are chimney flues running down the length of the wall. Likewise there are no ducts on the o...

Ceiling Mounted Recirculating Fans for Kitchen Without Window

Hi all, After some advice on kitchen ventilation. If a kitchen doesn't have a window and a fan is to be fitted for ventilation, my understanding is the options are a recirculating or extract fan attached to a duct? Can you get ceiling mounted recirculating fans? Something around the size of a centri...

Securing Floorboard When There's no Joist for Support

Hi all, I'm just wondering what methods exist for securing the end of a floorboard if it doesn't Overlap a joist? I have removed the board which is about 1m long and is secured to joists at one of the ends and in the middle. The only thing I can think of is to secure a thin rectangular piece of wood...

Regulations on Extrator Fan Ducting in Flats

Hi all, We've got an issue with cooking/burning smells coming from the flat below us. I have seen the neighbour's extractor from a distance and just looks like a rather large axial or could be centrifugal extractor fan (not an extraction hood). It has been said its of the recirculation type. I have ...

Re: What to do With Drafty Air Vent Found in Living Room

If you have humidity issues and condensation on windows-if single glazed then not sealing the room up too much might be beneficial. We've in a very old property built before air bricks etc. We have a fireplace that was boarded over by previous owner and eventually like you would like to open it up, ...

Re: Help Identifying Type of Wood and How to Cut and Fix to it

Oh good I got something right then! I was thinking today to maybe use a wood screw and bolt on the back as a screw alone would only be securing the vent through 7mm of mdf maybe that's plenty for a very light vent.

Thanks

Help Identifying Type of Wood and How to Cut and Fix to it

Hi all, I'm new to diy and struggling to identify what this panel is made from, see attached images. I thought it was mdf? Has no grain pattern on surface but then the edge does have a grain so not so sure. It seems pretty hard and is about 7mm thick. One of the images shows a scored rectangle. I'd ...

Re: Axial or Centrifugal Fan for Flat Bathroom

Thanks for the info. That's interesting what's regarded as a bathroom zone, not measured how high the ceiling is yet. I think an inline fan would be difficult for me to fit as I understand they fit between segments of duct and I don't have easy access into the roof space. But now that I know how muc...

Axial or Centrifugal Fan for Flat Bathroom

Hi all, I've got what I think is a very cheap axial fan (newlec) mounted by the door of the bathroom which i've heard is the wrong place to mount a fan but anyway. The fan connects to ducting (looks like inflexible rigid plastic pipe perhaps 15cm in diameter that is vertical for maybe 30cm above the...
