Is Polystyrene Loft Insulation any Good?

Hi,

I want to board out my loft (new house) and it seems it is insulated with the attached polystyrene foam stuff, thousands of them!

does anyone know what it is? do you think it has been there for a while and needs updating? I've got no idea how efficient this stuff is or how old?
