Re: Confused by the breakers in my CU

Thank you for your useful reply, exactly what I needed to know. There is no electric shower or anything else that would draw a heavy load, but maybe there used to be. The assumption is that the 40a circuit has thicker wiring then. I will check for peace of mind. As to the problem of two breakers tri...

Re: Confused by the breakers in my CU

Interesting that I posted about this CU before! I have no memory of that! I see that was about the start-up draw of the power saw.

The purpose of this post is to see if anyone can explain whey there would be different ratings of breakers.

Re: Confused by the breakers in my CU

Not a very helpful reply. Apologies for the slip - yes, 16A, not 15A! If the purpose of a breaker is to protect the wiring then why the different rated breakers? I realise I worded the original post a bit casually: no way am I about to replace a breaker with a higher rated one without understanding ...

Confused by the breakers in my CU

Whenever I run the dishwasher, washing machine and dryer at the same time it trips two of the breakers in the CU. Upon investigating I am totally baffled as to why the breakers that are there have been installed! You can see from the picture that for the "sockets" there is: 2 x 32A 1 x 40A...

Wet Insulation in Cavity Wall of new Extension

I am having an extension built and yesterday the brickie laid a few metres of cavity wall 1200mm high with rockwool insulation in the middle (I call it rockwool). They finished for the day and it has been torrentially raining ever since so the insulation is now soaked. This doesn't seem very clever ...

Re: Can I Replace 16A MCB With a 32A?

Thanks @collectors, useful info. The saw is brand new so I would hope not a capacitor failing yet.

However, I swapped over to the C breaker yesterday and problem solved.

Thanks for all the input guys.

Re: Can I Replace 16A MCB With a 32A?

Thanks both. From trial and error I see that the16a circuit only supplies 2 dbl sockets in the garage, the boiler and the boiler controls, plus the garage light and outdoor light. The CU (and the boiler) is in the garage as the garage is part of the house, so it looks like when the boiler was instal...

Can I Replace 16A MCB With a 32A?

Two parts to this question: 1) Curious, why do the 4 breakers in my CU labelled as "down sockets" have different current ratings? Two are 32, one is 40 and one is 16. If they are four ring circuits then why would they be different? 2) What has kicked this off is that I have just got a 2000...

Hole in Wall for Large Extract Fan but will a Lintel be Needed?

Small (2mx2m) utility room with flat roof. Cavity wall (block inside, brick out). I need to install a large (250mm diameter) extractor fan in one of the external walls. It will be quite high up, so in terms of the load from above the hole it will be approx 5 coarses of brick, and maybe a ceiling joi...

Grille Choice for Extractor Fan?

I have been looking into extraction rates for fitting a powerful through- the-wall extractor fan for a utility room. Having looked at airflow rates and identified a ( so-called) "industrial" fan as the way to go it occured to me that the external grille might have an impact on the extracti...

Replacing Slate Tiles With Concrete Tile and Concerns About Additional Weight

1925 house with (probably original) slate roof. Too many slipped/broken slates over the years to keep patching up so I think it is time to bite the bullet and get re-roofed. A roofer has quoted me for concrete tiles (as cheaper than slates), and indeed the adjoining house (semi-detached) had theirs ...
