Re: Drilling Wall Issues but do I Need a Better Drill?

Go to the breakers yard and get a seat belt. With some jiggery pokery you can cobble up an adjustable shoulder strap. Easily removed and/or adjusted to take a lot of the weight out of it. Remember than a regular drill bit rotates and when snagged up the cuck grinds off some of the drill whereas a SD...

Re: Interior Bricks Turning to "Powder" in pre 1749 Property

Edward and Wallace? Sure it's not Wallace and Grommet? It maybe they were a little over energetic and as the saying goes 'Shook the rafters'. Now back to the real world. It sounds almost sure a chemical reaction and I see that sulphuric has ad a role to play here. The fact the Old Lady is still stan...

Re: Interior Bricks Turning to "Powder" in pre 1749 Property

Yes the problem you have my friend is the coal. Over the eons of time this irrefutably beautiful house has been standing It has literally tons of fossil fuels burnt in it's grate. I'm very biased on homes that have stood the test of time but I will post an objective response. Coal and fossil fuels c...

Re: Want to Get Started in the Renovation Business,How to Start?

Don't worry kid you're not the first and you wont be the last to be in this situation. You however are smart enough to outstretch your hand for help, many don't and the whole project ends up laid on it's back wit it's arms and legs in the air. My first question will be "is this renovation your ...

Re: Banging Noise in Loft but not From Central Heating

Yup! Easy Peasey lemon squeezy. The problem you have described is an exact fit for the fault. Go into your loft space and locate your heating and hot water pipes that may be there. Where they pass through any joists or trusses use a spray foam and pump foam into the space around the pipes until it o...

Re: Need Tool Gift for Father's Day

Slip it in an envelope address it to the recipient and pop it in the mail. Works for me. Fathers day pressie - How about a nice Shimano rod. Carbon fire as strong as an ox and he can think about his shed while he wiles away the day. That's what I do. Yup! There's a time to build and a time to relax ...

Re: Fixing to Plasterboard Using red Plastic Wall Plugs

I've just finished wiping my eye's dry when I read the title. Let's understand something from the beginning. A red plug is for masonry not sheet rock. Sheet rock fixings are for sheet rock. Can you see the sleight of hand here? You cant use shoe laces either nor Sellotape they dont work. Sheet rock ...

Re: Drilling Wall Issues but do I Need a Better Drill?

Yes you do. Cordless tools are good but have their limitations. Site H&S rules are changing and in the main by the pedantic ones. I disagree with many however the are swaying toward cordless tools and have converted to 110v stuff now. There are available many excellent breaker controls to isolat...

Re: Problem Choosing Architect for 2 Storey Extension

Cottage Renovator offers some good guidance and if I may I will maybe add some more to an already comprehensive response. Many Architectural Practices rarely get involved in projects less than £250k however that's not to say they wont. The Architect will have all the rules for the build at hand and ...

Re: Help Identifying Where Building Line is

No - If it exceeds the building line outward say then you will be ordered to retract your building curtilage. Sometimes there may be a rear building line and the same applies to that. The local building control; will have charts to show you exactly where your building line is. Hire a Total Station a...

Re: Glued Batten on Plastered Wall

Short answer = Yes Long answer = The glue didn't work you stand testament to that. Even if you attempt to screw it back it will look like my Mother-in-laws knicker draw. Just plain horrible/ After a certain weight is imposed on any fixture it doesn't matter if you stick it with 2:1 mortar mix it wil...

Re: 110 Volts vs 230-240v - Rationale?

I despise that directive when a portable mcb or eld box can be easily plugged into a 240v socket. In the US they only have 110v and it is bloody awful and looses all of its power in around 50 feet. Short in the cable cause lightening strikes from the wound and the tools can be substantially heavier ...

Re: Compound Mitre Saw Size for Cutting Skirting

As you only need to cut a 45 angle then a 90 up to just short of the top of the skirting. I use a good old fashion hand or mitre saw and a utility knife to slice the slip I tend toward a larger disk blade as it saves me changing it when I'm cutting thicker timber. With a great deal of care it is eas...

Re: Building Invoicing for Tools

Many don't realise that there is a known equation used when pricing work. When you buy a tool say a circular saw it would consist of a blade and a drill. The two of them depreciate over time and use. The blade (historically) would be around 500 metres of cutting timber and the drill bought at say £3...
