Re: Nightmare double glazing

So an interesting follow up to this problem that may be of use to others, plus a question of course... It turns out that the leaks are coming on the joint between the frame and the snap-on extender bar at the bottom of the window. Water is getting into the minute gap, running along and emerging at t...

Re: Nightmare double glazing

Hi stoneyboy, Thanks for the reply. They don’t have sills. The window frame is installed sitting directly on the original cement (concrete?) sills. The drain holes are clear, there is no casement on at least one with the problems. I have tucked strips of DPC under the frame, so between the frame and...

Nightmare double glazing

We bought a 1920s solid brick build house a couple of years back and have been working through the issues bit by bit. One problem that is coming up time and time again is regarding the windows. They are uPVC frames, probably fitted 30+ years ago and put quite simply. They leak. Not every one, but a ...

Re: Vapour barrier in crawl space?

Hi stoneyboy, Thanks for the reply - the dirt floor is very uneven - it's pushed up to the walls at the edges and has random surface variations that I don't think could be levelled out too easily. Makes me think if I attempted a concrete screed over it, it would be in no way flat. The house next doo...

Vapour barrier in crawl space?

We live in a 1920s house with an unfinished crawl space about 3-5 feet high under the entire house. All except one room has a dirt floor, the last one being concrete floored. The dirt floor is damp, salts have risen on it leaving white on the earth, there’s a variety of rubbish in there built up ove...

Strange Damp 'Beside' Window With old Double Glazing

Before I start making a mess ripping things apart here :) We have old double-glazing in a solid-wall 1920's property. It's been in since the 70s and various individual windows have had problems, usually to do with lower trim strips letting water in, which then seeps below the frame and saturates the...

Loft Insulation in Detached House With Suspended Ceilings

Hi, first posting but a lurker for a while... We’ve purchased a 1920s build large detached house with a series of upstairs bedrooms with suspended ceilings. The ceilings were put in by a previous owner and consist of voids about 12-18” deep filled with about 100mm of insulation. The main roof space ...
