Re: Wall height

Hi jintynut,
Sorry to hear you have health issues and will have to employ a contractor.
I suspect that if you try drilling a 14mm hole in the centre concrete core, that you may split it. How about drilling 6.5mm holes, screwing in 100x6mm stainless screws and casting around them.

Re: Wall height

Hi jintynut, Thanks for the reply - I can now envisage what you propose but I think you are making it over complicated and expensive. Try hiring a Hilti drill and bit for just one day and see how easy it is, or not as the case may be. I hope you don’t mind me asking but why do you need to reinforce ...

Re: Tyvek or similar on external blockwork

Hi whydidistartthis ,
Provided your external cladding is weatherproof the is little to be gained by including a layer of breathable felt.
Inevitably in cold weather damp will condense on the inside of the cold exterior cladding, a breathable membrane will not prevent this.

Re: Wall height

Hi jintynut,
I don’t think your proposal will work because the drill stand action will just lift the whole assembly as you try to drill a hole.

Re: Fixing Bike Rack to Shed Wall

Hi greek, You have what is called through bolts, they work well in brick type walls where you can drill a clean hole the same size as the sleeve. The sleeve expands at the end when the bolt is tightened so they are not very good in aerated concrete walls or similar soft walls . Check to ensure the e...

Re: Wall height

Hi jintynut,
You will have to use a good quality drill and drill bit.. I’d suggest Hilti but there may be others so try hiring one..

Hi Craigslist,
The most likely problem will be the push button, try replacing this first.

Hi tomov,
Either use handrail brackets to hold the handrail off the wall or fit a pigs ear handrail.

Re: Using an AAV for washing machine waste trap

Hi benawhile, I’m assuming that you will retain the existing standpipe arragement ie a vertical pipe with 150mm water seal on the bottom and open end at the top. You will need to add two bends to connect into the pipe through the wall and there is no point in adding an AAV because the standpipe has ...

Re: Gap under skirting in conservatory

Hi jemima123, It looks.ike you have gaps both above and below the skirting. Your first move is to spray creepy crawly killer in both gaps all along the boards. Stick masking tape on the floor and on the front of the skirting so only the gap is showing and then apply brown silicone sealant, smooth is...

Re: Damp patches on top floor - no idea who to call

Hi soufhlondoner17, It must be very frustrating for you to have bought a reasonable looking property only to discover there are inherent issues. If you paid for a full survey then you must approach them with your issues. If it was a homebuyers survey you are unlikely to get helpful response. Because...

Re: Parent's chalet bungalow - insulation plan.

Hi theteaboy, I don’t know of any insulation that comes in 350mm widths If you are going to use REA45 best to cut this into 350mm strips across the slabs leaving a narrow piece of waste. I find a sharp carving knife very effective at cutting the slabs. The nail heads will be inconvenient for fitting...

Re: Stud wall / insulating around box

Hi tinc93,
From your question I assume the pipe in the right top of your photo is a flue pipe. It’s most likely to be a twin walled flue but you need to check with whoever services your boiler that it’s ok to box it in. If you get the ok use plasterboard not plywood.

Re: Stud wall / insulating around box

Hi Timc93,
Add a piece of you 4x2 on top of the two vertical studs either side of the proposed window, then add further vertical studs on this and up to a horizontal ceiling stud. The short vertical studs will be inset to allow for the consumer unit and the soil pipe.

Hi shock999,
Since you have breathable felt fitted both under the tiles and under the rafters with ventilation between the two you should not have any issues with condensation.
