Yes I would suspect a partial blockage,you could try rodding upwards from the manhole or take out a toilet pan and rod that way,if the pipe is plastic then cut it in the loft and rod

get some wood 1/2" silicone it and slide it in then cover with a strip of upvc

The pump is now useless ,it used to take cold water from a roof tank and hot water from the hot water cylinder and pump it to the shower,you no longer have this system, now you have a combi the water is pressurised hence no need for a pump to increase the water pressure,the shower you have now sound...

do the downstairs rads get hot when you turn on the boiler,for now put the boiler on manual so as there's no automatic (thermostat/timer) control over the heating

no don't add anything,with a combi it's pressurised so will push any air out,

there's a possibility that if it's a an old heating system they used to connect the pipes to it on the gravity hot water circuit,if so it would pay to connect the pipes to the heating circuit

rubber washers are made to a hardness scale,' never heard of that one, the more subtle they are the washer will mold into the seating

they should be automatic air valves it's common when heating pipes run through the attic, my advice with a combi would be take them out, the red cap should unscrew and shouldn't have been left on as they stop the air from escaping like they are meant to do
