Re: Earth bonding a double insulated device?

Yes it does seem odd, we have to provide an earth to fixed equipment even if not required, the rules say "A circuit protective conductor shall be run to and terminated at each point in wiring and at each accessory except a lampholder having no exposed-conductive-parts and suspended from such a ...

Re: Smart meter monitors what good are they?

Now the meter has been installed for some time, I can say the IHD (in home display) is rubbish. Last night just past midnight it showed used today £0.00 which was I suppose correct but then says of which 59.3p is standing charge so clearly an error. Also I had used 5.01 kWh which since only 3 minute...

Re: Built in oven Installation Question?.

It should be fine with a plug. British law requires items which are plugged in to be provided with a plug, so if the manufacturer says it should not be plugged in then they can sell it without a plug, so we have seen since brexit items saying they need hard wiring to get around the British law. The ...

Re: Smart meter monitors what good are they?

I do get a display on the in house display which can be set to show pounds, and the solar panel software shows what I use in the day and I can go back until fitted, but same does not go for the IHD so can't view what I used yesterday in pounds, and the total kWh used does not help, as midnight until...

Smart meter monitors what good are they?

I have had a smart meter fitted, forced to fit one if I want paying for export, and also split tariff can reduce costs further, so totally see the point. But it came with a little monitor, we placed it on the TV stand and started to observe the readings, from sun up to sun down it alternates screens...

Re: Trv radiator head problem

When I got my electronic heads, they came with a kit of adaptors, for RA, RAV, RAVL I used eQ-3 as at that time the cheapest, and latter used TP-Link (Kasa) which also included a kit.

Re: Installing Touch light switches on 3-way and 4-way circuit

It seems to have posted OK maybe Mr White will give it a look over, my problem is this means 4 switches need to be powered by current through the bulb, so may get a problem with bulb staying on dim, and the diagram is only my best guess, I have no way to test it.

Re: Installing Touch light switches on 3-way and 4-way circuit

1 way = on/off, 2 way = either/or, traffic lights green or red, 3 way = one of three options so could be used with traffic lights for example red, amber, green. So a three way switch has three positions, normally you will turn a knob. So 4 way could be off, red, amber or green. So when I see a switc...

Re: How do you test for "leaky" electrical current

There are two types of meter the insulation resistance meter, which typically uses 500 volt to test, but uses DC so not a true reading of leakage, however if a RCD is tripping really the only way. And the clamp on meter, so you can clamp around both the live wires, that's line and neutral so shows t...

Re: Smart Switch Wiring in Old House

I have used wood chisel in the main, but today yes the multi tool is likely the answer. I got a set of bits from little which I have used as the central point does not stick out much, but still need a chisel to finish it off, so in the main use spacier,

Hole saw? The proper tool is like a hole saw with a knife which goes around it, but designed for plaster and brick not wood.

Re: Smart Switch Wiring in Old House

The switch you show has two cables, red and black, and red, yellow, blue. It is likely the red and black are switch wires from lamp, and that the red, yellow, blue go to the other switch. So red, yellow, blue into a block connector so can be reused latter, and red and black to the new switch, may be...

Re: New 3 channel controller is losing time

I have never set the date and time on my wall thermostat, it is auto corrected from the internet, with my older model it used a battery and never seemed to need setting except when battery changed, but back in the day of a programmer the time would go out with a power failure, but looked up your uni...

Re: Smart Switch Wiring in Old House

If we consider you have a master and slave switch, it would seem your showing the master, so the other switch of the pair with have two wires in two out of three terminals so the wire on it's own likely goes to Com and will no longer be required, and the two cables with it also no longer required, s...

Re: 3 gang switch headache

As said no fixed colour code, clearly left hand switch in picture short of a wire, but no way to see which one. You may get more of an idea by looking at cables, but a sketch tells us nothing as no idea where cables go.
