Re: Outdoor lights with two switches - confused

I think to do what you want would need 5 cores. May be easier to use smart stuff, be it smart switches or smart bulbs.

Re: Wiring two eye level ovens

It does depend on where you live, here in Wales the kitchen is a special location same as outside and bathroom, in England only the bathroom is a special location. You can still DIY but cost to register the work means not worth it. One can get duel cooker outlets which nicely split the cable, but de...

Re: Multiple built in electric ovens on domestic 100A supply

In the main ovens use full power to heat up, then they switch on/off to maintain the heat, it could be arranged that they load share i.e. a set up were only 3 can turn on at any one time, so total amps is reduced. Although would still be taking the same energy. So yes possible, but you should be tel...

Re: Making the best of a bad solar PV installation

Interesting what you say, I am new to solar power, but as an electrician I can see the problems. With me without E7 a little easier to work out, but it is when and how solar is used. It seems we have thresh hold limits, the point when we start charging a battery or heating our DHW, and it seems thes...

Re: RCD protections with a FCU, what will paperwork tell me.

The saga continues, seems the iboost+ fitted uses DC not AC, loads of warnings in the installation instructions about turning the volt meters to DC to measure. But the CU is full of type AC RCBO's, even a type A is only good for 6 mA so would need a RDC to trip should DC be found or the RCD will not...

Solar panels, and what to expect.

I have about 2 weeks ago made the plunge into having solar panels, professionally fitted and set up, as no way at 72 am I climbing on my roof. Every one I talk to seems to have some issues when fitted, I am no different, The thing which made me go for them, was the worry that a power cut would leave...

Re: RCD protections with a FCU, what will paperwork tell me.

It has been pointed out that for a 13 amp fuse the PSCC needs to be 95 amp and an inverter will not provide this, a three amp fuse needs 14 amp so it may be OK with 3 amp fuse, but two pumps, two motorised valves and central heating really needs 5 amp fuse, and my copy of BS 7671 does not give the E...

Re: Fan isolator switch replaced

There are two methods to fault find. 1) You take a informed guess as to where fault is likely to be, and check that area. 2) You slowly test step by step. My first step would be check if my RCBO is switched on, and I would press the test button and see it trip, then reset it, this assumes you have R...

RCD protections with a FCU, what will paperwork tell me.

I think the electricians have made an error, I have had an UPS supply for central heating and three freezers, the latter has RCD type A sockets, but the boiler seems to still have the original switched FCU. So is seems likely the boiler, pumps, motorised valves, and thermostats will have no RCD prot...

Re: Central heating stat setup advice

The government in their wisdom has required that central heating is split into zones, but it is unclear what they mean by zones, a number of country councils have considered fitting TRV on radiators is counted as splitting into zones, but many central heating fitters seem to think you need a zone va...

If you google "immersion heater timer" and click on images you can scroll through the pictures far easier, it would seem "LGA Selectric Digital Immersion Heater Timeswitch" seems to match. This m seems to be link to instructions, I have said how I found it in case I have wrong one.

Re: Hall, Stairs & Landing lights not working

Standard British way to wire lights are to take the lives and earth ceiling rose to ceiling rose, then at each rose take the line to the switch and the switches line back. The ceiling rose will normally have a clamp for the earths, then a row of 8 connectors split into 3, 3, 2 the first 3 are neutra...

Re: Socket on lighting circuit for LED undercounter lights

Yes you can fit a socket, I have done it myself under the kitchen cabinets so can't be seen from a normal standing position so highly unlikely anyone will unplug the lights and use socket for anything else. As to switching on/off I use smart controls, hey google turn on kitchen lights is far easier ...

Re: Ringmain cables under insulation

I am not sure, if the cable can be run there, it would be OK on a flat wall as you have one socket on the wall, but not sure if within the permitted zones on a curved wall. If I was doing it I would use a thicker cable for that run to insure the cable is within the 20 amp requirement for that cable ...

Re: Changed Light Socket in Living Room, Kitchen Lights no longer work

There are two ways to wire lights, use the switch back box as a junction box, or the ceiling rose as a junction box, the latter is the normal method in the UK, it has some advantages with less volt drop, and power for emergency lights and ceiling fans. But there is a inductive and capacitive linking...
