Re: Moving or spurring ring socket?

I would use a cooker connection unit as a junction box where the old socket is and spur from that to new socket. Technically is says use maintenance free where not accessible, but what is not accessible? Some jobs I have worked on they have built walls, but consider the plant behind wall as accessib...

Re: Boiler Protection Thermostat

The old bi-metal strip thermostat normally had a heater to reduce the difference between on and off temperatures so had three wires, feed, return and neutral, however often for frost protection the heater was not required so it may be only two wire. In the main they would work a motorised valve whic...

Re: Replace closet light with led system

You can get a PIR bulb, that's the easy way. There were years ago adaptors to run ones smoothing iron from the light socket even with double adaptors and pull cords. Likely designed when lighting electric charged independent of power electric at a lower price, using lighting for power was illegal bu...

Re: Maximum number of sockets for refurb

In theroy the loop impedance needs to be low enough so the volt drop with not exceed 5% and the prospective short circuit current will be high enough to ensure the over load device will trip within the required time if there is a short circuit. Main limiting factor is volt drop, it was 4% which was ...

Re: Isolated shower unit still has voltage?

As said a voltage testing unit should not rely on batteries, and should include a proving unit. However I don't there are another item to carry around so I only carried one when it was a sacking offence not to. It is likely induced voltag...

Re: Can you put electric underfloor heating in a triangular room?

There are many types of heating mat, but with the chemical type it can be cut to lenght, and does not need sensors. As the cable gets warmer its resistance increases, and so it self regulates. Some you need to install whole lenght, some has points where it can be cut, and even the chemical type need...

Re: Heating system upgrade for main and ensuite bathrooms?

The problem with higher pressure is lock shield valves can leak. And losing the storage means hard to add solar, there are heat exchangers that do allow mains pressure without pressuring whole cylinder so no need for annual tests. But cost v saving is hard, I use electronic TRV heads so unused rooms...

Re: surge protection socket

I am also as an electrician unsure if surge protection is required, if a surge was taking out our LED lights, one would expect to see multi failures at the same time, I have not seen this, However my son has lost more LED bulbs than me, and I have a SPD and he does not, but he thinks it was due to a...

Re: Immersion timer wiring and timer not working

It does seem the brown wire on the right is one terminal to the left of where it should be, that is what I would do as a quick fix if timer went faulty until I could get a new timer, so as Mr White says make sure timer is OK before moving wire.

Re: Dead wire, leave in wall?

I had a potential extremely dangerous situation with what I was told were redundant cables, which were only live when a remote plant was running. So I am now very wary with seeming dead cables, thermostats and timers can mean cables which seem dead are not, so unless one can ring out the cable and f...

Re: surge protection socket

Surge protection devices can fail, so most built into sockets can be renewed without renewing whole socket, they also come as different classes, and I have not really looked into what the classes mean, I think the one built into my consumer unit was around the £30 mark, and it has indicators to show...

Re: EICR - Shallow Box Depth Question

The old EICR had 4 main codes, but the IET decided code 4 = does not comply with current edition of BS7671 was misleading, so it was reduced to three main codes, with a C in front so you know new system is being used. So you have C1 = dangerous which is reasonably cut and dried, but C2 = potentially...

Re: Fitting ceiling light with 4 wires

In the UK the standard method to wire ceiling lights is power goes from ceiling rose to ceiling rose, and there is a switch cable from the ceiling rose to the on/off switch, this means there is always a live supply at the ceiling rose to work fans or emergency lights, and it keeps the loop impedance...

Re: What is this type face plate/cover called?

Looks like a MK 50A 1-Way Pull Cord Switch White with Neon but it is not a cover, the switch deals with a lot of current, and any poor connection can cause a fire, since chance of fire is so high, I would recommend you get an electrician to change it.

Re: Faulty immersion timer for dual immersion tank system?

As said, landlords problem. However the main reason for a timer is when you have off peak power, the idea is an immersion near bottom of tank works during off peak times, and one near top is set to lower temperature can cuts in when you run out of water heated with off peak. In many homes the off pe...
