:D Hi folks enjoying the weather out here in Bulgaria were we have relocated to and we need some help with the depth of foundations. We are converting a barn and building a single story sand stone extension to extend the barn.

What depth of concrete foundations will we need?

Always check with local authority for planning first.
but if you do go ahead I would suggest depth of around 1metre or until
the ground is fairly solid.
Depends on the ground really if its solid clay or bedrock obviously not that deep.
BUT ALWAYS CHECK WITH LOCAL BUILDING AUTHORITY.

:) Thanks Welsh brickie, the ground gets pretty solid at about 500mm and we have built a stone wood shed with founds set at this and it's 1.8m high and is standing standing up very well.

For the extension to the barn I think we will use about 600mm/650mm depth and about 500mm wide.

if your building a cavity wall 250mm thick you need a 600mm wide
foundation.
I dont know how thick your wall is but you must have a 150mm toe of
concrete each side of your wall,I would make sure its 225mm thick,and I personally would reinforce the foundation .
always check with planning office, if you go ahead reguardless it will
cost you dearly in the end,I know its a headache but you must check
first ,The information I gave you is for UK building standard not european
regs.
