How do I remove tiles from plasterboard? Advice and information on tiling and fixing tiles to a variety of surfaces

Hi all,

I want to remove all the existing tiles from my bathroom walls with a view to re-tiling from the floor to the ceiling.

How do I remove the existing tiles without damaging the plasterboard walls underneath and how do I prepare the walls for re-tiling?

You have to accept that you most probably can't and that you may well have to fit new plasterboard afterwards. Take it carefully and see how it goes.

if it were me i'd take it all down, plasterboard and all then reboard. it will actually save heaps of time in the long run. trying to remove the tiles without damaging the pb is very painstaking and, frankly, virtually impossible. quicker, easier and not too much more expensive to replace the plasterboard. just a bit more messy is all.

Exactly what I will be doing in my bathroom.

Someone posted on here to say that you can use a wide blade scraper to do the job but its likely to take forever and you'll most likely still end up with holes in the wall.

Much simpler, although much messier to pull the lot down and start from scratch.

You could of course if you have enough thickness to work with e.g. skirtings & frames tile straight over after cleaning the old tiles with methalated spirit or the like. As existing tiles will be stuck fast, hence problems getting them off!
