I am changing a ceiling light and only have a 3 exit/entry junction box/connector to get all of the wires in! Is there a way of splitting them out e.g. so the live doesn't go in the same hole as the switching wire - or do these need to be together?

The standard ceiling rose/junction box has 2 connections for switch wire, 3 connections for loop, and 3 connections for Neutral. The earth is normally a clamp.
If you replace the standard rose/box accessibility has to be considered Junction boxes with screw terminals must be accessible for inspection, testing & maintenance or, alternatively, use maintenance-free terminals /
connections (Regulation 526.3). I think Hagar do a maintenance-free version you will need to ask local whole sale outlet.
With those it is one hole for one wire.
